The Challenge
When you need to capture critical evidence, every frame matters. Standard camera apps have a problem: if you need to split a long recording into uploadable chunks, you get gaps. Stop recording, start a new file, upload the previous one—and you've lost 100+ milliseconds of footage. That's 3+ frames gone, potentially including the most important moment.
Verity solves this with native chunked recording technology that captures continuously while outputting discrete, independently-playable segments for streaming upload.
Zero-Gap Recording
Our iOS recording engine uses a double-buffered writer architecture. While one segment is being finalized and uploaded, the next is already capturing. The transition is seamless:
Two writers alternate: while one records, the other finalizes and prepares. Zero frames lost.
Each output segment (typically 3 seconds) is a complete, independently-playable MP4 file. This means even if your phone is seized mid-recording, everything already uploaded is intact and verifiable.
Interruption Resilience
Real-world recording is messy. Phone calls come in. Notifications pop up. Your phone might overheat in direct sunlight. Verity handles all of these gracefully:
Phone Calls
Recording pauses during the call, then seamlessly resumes with a clean segment boundary. No corrupted files, no lost chunks.
Thermal Pressure
If your phone heats up, Verity automatically reduces video quality (1080p to 720p to 480p) to keep recording. Evidence at lower quality beats no evidence.
Orientation Changes
Rotate your phone mid-recording and we start a fresh segment with the correct orientation. Clean transitions for smooth playback.
Camera Switching
Switch between front and back cameras and recording continues on the new camera with a clean segment boundary.
Real-Time Streaming Upload
Each segment is uploaded the moment it's finalized—typically within a second of capture. This is the core of Verity's evidence preservation:
Typical latency: under 5 seconds from capture to safe in your storage.
Segment Concatenation
After recording ends, you have the option to combine all segments into a single continuous video file for easier playback and sharing. This happens entirely on your device:
- Passthrough mode — If all segments have the same resolution and orientation, we concatenate without re-encoding. Fast and lossless.
- Re-encode mode — If you changed quality or orientation mid-recording, we re-encode for smooth playback. Takes longer but produces a seamless result.
- Automatic selection — By default, Verity analyzes your segments and picks the best approach.
The original segments remain available for verification. The concatenated file is for convenience—the attestation chain references the original chunks.
Technical Specifications
| Segment Duration | 3 seconds (configurable) |
| Video Codec | H.264 (hardware accelerated) |
| Audio Codec | AAC @ 128 kbps |
| Default Resolution | 1080p (dynamically reduced under thermal pressure) |

Why This Matters
Standard camera apps stop and restart recording between segments, losing frames. Some evidence preservation apps record twice simultaneously (massive battery drain). Verity's double-buffered approach gives you the best of both: no gaps, no battery penalty.
Open Questions
We're transparent about what we're still working on:
- Android support — Our iOS recording engine is complete. Android development is in progress.
- Background recording — Currently, recording requires Verity to be the active app. Background recording introduces privacy tradeoffs we're carefully considering.
- Metadata embedding — We're exploring adding GPS coordinates and other sensor data directly into segments for additional verification value.
